每逢禮拜六前夜①，總不由得想起舊事，於是刻骨銘心的痛苦便折磨著我的心。當年一到這天晚上，我的祖父就用他那部焦黃的大胡子去摩挲伊本•埃茲拉②的書，戴花邊頭飾的老婆子則把瘦長的手指伸在禮拜六的蠟燭上占蔔，幸福地放聲嚎哭。而我那顆孩童的心便會像著了魔的浪濤上的一葉扁舟，劇烈地晃動……
我在日托米爾市轉來轉去，尋找那顆怯弱的星星。在古老的猶太會堂前，冷漠的黃墻根下，蓄著先知式的大胡子，凹陷的胸前裹著受難節③穿的破衣爛衫的猶太老人，出售著粉筆、藍靚粉、燈撚……
我面前是集市和集市的死亡。豐衣足食的油汪汪的靈魂已被處死。貨攤都上了鎖，路面潔無一物，活像死人的禿頂。那顆怯弱的星星閃爍著，行將熄滅………
