1970年烏韋·約翰遜在《試圖解釋一種心態：論在德意志聯邦共和國的一類東德公民》的文章中寫道：
誰離開，不需要一種具體的當前政治原因，甚至不需要所有原因。他與東德斷絕了關係，他不再相信她的話，他不能再繼續和她過下去了，聽到她的聲音他就受不了，他對她不再信任，現狀不能再繼續下去了。所有這些說法都是人們用來描述私人關係解體時的狀況的。因為走的人完全清楚，用俗話說是他遺棄了她，就像一位太頤指氣使的新娘，有朝一日也該讓她嚐嚐受傷害的滋味……

一個外國人在各種官方辦事機構先要公開自己的履歷，不是再次出於信任把履歷交付出去，也不是講述，而是公開。這與講述截然相反。鑒於公開之後或者能獲得機會，或者將失去機會，這種公開已經意味著置疑。我回憶自己在難民營度過的時光。新來的人得手里拿著一張紙穿過一扇扇門去辦手續，先去哪里後去哪里的順序是規定好了的。最初要進的兩扇門是聯邦情報局的辦事處，不，門上當然沒有這麽寫，門上寫著：測試機構a和測試機構b。手里那張紙叫檢驗單，這名字起碼還誠實。當時有的門上貼著紙條，上面寫著：我德語無懂。德國辦事員覺得這句語法不通的句子很滑稽，但又不允許他們明著說，所以他們就用這種辦法來表達。…
