「獨」另外有個「獨立」的意思，這就是莊子在〈大宗師〉所說的「見獨」。每個生命都是不可替代、不能複製的「獨體」。我今天生成這個樣子，不管外在的形體或內在的才性，都是獨一無二，沒有影印機可以完全複製。一個人能自覺其生命是「獨體」，而徹悟到他「當體自足，了無缺憾」，在精神上根本不必依賴別人的愛賞、讚譽，當然也就不必在乎別人的鄙棄或毀謗，甚至生命本身的死生壽夭也可以順其自然，這就是「見獨」了。
一個人假如不能徹悟自己的生命是個「獨體」，就經常會拿自己和別人比較。「比較」是挫折的来源，我比人美，固然高興；但是，相對的比別人醜，不就傷心了嗎？我比別人尊貴，固然高興；但是，相對的比別人卑賤，不就傷心了嗎？在這種「比較串」的世俗價值體系中，一輩子都比不完，因此人們就生活在悲喜哀樂的鎖鏈之中，解脫不開来。其實，一個人活著最好不要比来比去，只要活出自己最真實的樣子，便是「見獨」了。…
