佛教傳入中國，是中國歷史中最重大的事件之一。從它傳入以後，它就是中國文化的重要因素，在宗教、哲學、文學、藝術方面有其特殊影響。

佛教傳入的確切年代是一個有爭論的問題，歷史家們仍未解決，大概是發生在公元一世紀上半葉。傳統的說法是在東漢明帝(58—75年在位)時，但是現在有證據說明在明帝以前在中國已經聽說有佛教了。爾後佛教的傳播是一個漫長而逐步的過程。從中國的文獻資料看，在公元一、二世紀，佛教被人認為是有神秘法術的宗教，與陰陽家的和後來道教的神秘法術沒有多大不同。…
