詮釋的活動不只是字句訓詁的問題，不只是歷史文物制度考證的問題，不只是地上所能掌握的資料，也不只是地下所挖掘出來的資料，不只是如何上天下地去把握而已，因為這些都只是基礎。這些基礎是作為展開理解的一個起點，但不是理論性的基礎建構。真正理論性的基礎建構應該是我們這里所說的這五層的詮釋層級、五層的存有之道的開展層級。我認為人文學的研究必須要以字句的訓詁、歷史文物制度考證或者地上你能掌握的、地下能挖掘的種種東西作為一個起點，但是不能以此起點當作終點。這個起點能不能清楚還必須放到這五層詮釋層級或是存有之道的開展層級里去加以論證，才能夠對字句的訓詁、歷史文物的考證，地上或是地下所挖掘的資料下判斷。…
