我終於面對面看見遊擊隊。
那天我很苦悶，不知道自己究竟能做什麽。門旁有一條銀色的細線貼在墻上隱隱發光，看見這條線就知道蝸牛從這裏爬過。我打開日記本寫上：“蝸牛有路，指南針有方向，唯我獨自仿徨。”
詞窮，心中郁悶未解，就再寫一遍。一連寫了七八遍。這時聽見外面有雄壯的歌聲，許多人引吭高歌，黃墩從來沒有過這樣的聲勢。
我跑出去看。狹窄的街道上兩旁是人，平坦的打麥場上滿場是人，拿著槍，短衣外面扎著子彈袋。街旁的人隨意坐在地上，沒有一個人站著，打麥場上的人規規矩矩地站著，沒有一個人坐下。打麥場上的漢子唱“中國不會亡”，歌頌八百壯士守四行倉庫。這是我第一次聽見這支歌，聽一遍就會了，是一首容易普及的好歌。…

抗日救國的情緒高漲，連土匪都自動變成遊擊隊。魯南的土匪一向有他們的哲學，理直氣壯。可是日本人打進來，他們覺得再當土匪就丟人了。
遊擊隊浩浩蕩蕩，在東方，西方，南方，隱隱現現，田野做他們的腳凳。北方隔著蘭陵，看不見。他們，有國民黨支持的，有共產黨支持的，也有單幹戶，左右雙方都在拉他。我們熟識的人都投入了。
小寶是拾豆的時候開始動心的。收豆子事實上等於搶割，百姓千家一起動手，田野裏佈滿了人。豆田的面積逐漸縮小，藏身其中的野兔驚惶起來。…
