薩特正確地看到，以《鼠疫》中的塔魯為代表的這種流亡觀念表達了一種矛盾，即暴力既是不可避免的，又是不合理的。薩特堅稱，加繆對這種悖論的回應是“沒有任何根據的論調”，就像他的西西弗斯一樣，仍然遭受著譴責，但無法改變現實。事實上，加繆對他的祖國阿爾及利亞不斷升級的衝突感到絕望，這有效地招致了一場同時發生在兩邊的“瘟疫”，即為獨立而戰和引發了法國的鎮壓。最後，他主動選擇了沈默。政治現實主義者雷蒙德·阿隆（Raymond Aron）很好地抓住了這個問題，他承認加繆的行為是出於同情和對正義的渴望，但他總結說，加繆在道德上的沈默“並沒有成功地超越一個善意的殖民者的心態”。…
