《委曲求全》的人物不但缺乏個性，而且也沒有生展的痕跡。他們都是福斯特（E. M. Forster）所說的“平滑性格”（flat character），出娘胎時是什麽樣，到老時也還是那樣。你想不到站在張董事面前的王太太和站在顧校長面前的王太太是兩樣的人，你也想不到陸海或馬三在另一情境中會現出另一樣的面目。他們的性格生下來就固定了，劇情的轉變好比一面轉動的鏡…

寫戲劇難在布局，布局難在於每幕之中造成一種緊張空氣，把聽眾的注意和興趣引起而又抓住。就這一點說，《委曲求全》幾乎是無瑕可指。也許有人嫌第一幕稍沈悶一點，但是這是不易避免的。戲劇第一幕的任命向來是在埋伏線索和介紹角色，免不著一些比較沈悶的解釋。第一幕的成功和失敗不在劇情的轉變是否生動，而在所埋伏的線索能否醞釀出生動的劇情來。
一部戲好比個問題和它的答案，第一幕的職務就在把問題引出來。如觀眾看到…
