在其他時間里，「過去」就像力量一樣，仍然對現在有影響、有意義。狄爾泰這里的觀點顯然受到胡塞爾現象學的影響。狄爾泰對此有一段頗富詩意的描寫：
生命之流本身從來不會停頓下來供人觀察，而是洶湧澎湃地流向大洋。這樣的生命之流在流動之時，我們既不能把握它，也不能表現它。我們只能記錄生命之流的部分內容，把這個流動的物體分解為固定的、零碎的部分。我們只能從這種事實中獲得部分內容的各個側面，而其錯綜複雜的屬性仍然被我們不合適地稱為綜合性、多樣性和多重性。(58)…
