春天，西湖，花開滿園。
整個賓館是個小砂嘴，伸入湖中。我的窗子虛懸在水波上，小水鴨在遠近悠遊。
清晨六時，我們走出門來，等一個約好的人。那人是個船夫——其實也不是船夫，應該說他的妻子是個船婦。而他，出於體貼吧！也就常幫著劃船。既然長在西湖邊上，好像人人天生都該是劃船高手似的。
昨天，我們包了他的船一整天。中午去“樓外樓”一起吃清炒蝦仁和叫化雞，請他們夫婦同座同席。他聽說我們想去蘇州，便極力保證他可以替我們去買船票，晚上上船，第二天清早就到蘇州。他說他有關系，絕對可以買到票。…

有個親戚死了，在遙遠的故土。消息傳來，已是半年之後，我的悲傷也因不合節拍而顯得有些荒謬。何況彼此是遠親，毫無血緣關系。但畢竟我握過她枯纖如柴的老手，感覺過她淚水滴落在我腕上的溫度，也曾驚訝的看她住在黑如地穴的破屋裏，手捧一把小炭籃與之相依為命。畢竟我也曾為她去買她視為仙丹的西洋參丸，聽她說淒涼的晚境……
然而，這個生命卻消失了，微賤如蟻。
好些日子以來，我晝思夜夢的常是那老婦人被兒子惡吼一聲的悲怔。
那天，我和丈夫去看她，時間是上午，我們談了兩小時的話，趕在中午以前離去。她依依不舍，抵死要留我們吃飯，但環堵蕭然，她哪裏有飯可供我們吃？不得已，她說：…
