戲劇除了普遍廣布歷史與音樂於民間，也具有同等重要的教育功用。供給人們以一切分解善惡的道德意識，實際上一切標準的中國意識，忠臣孝子，義仆勇將，節婦烈女，活潑黠詭之婢女，幽靜癡情之小姐，現均表演之於戲劇中。用故事的形式來扮演各個人物，人物成為戲劇的中心，孰為他們所憎，孰為他們所愛，他們深深的感受著道德意識的激動，曹操的奸詐，閔子騫的孝順，卓文君的私奔，崔鶯鶯的多情，楊貴妃的驕奢，秦檜的賣國，嚴嵩的貪暴，諸葛亮的權謀，張飛的暴躁，以及目蓮的宗教的聖潔，——他們都於一般中國人很熟悉，以他們的倫理的傳統意識，構成他們判別善惡行為的具體概念。…
