沈從文《月下小景》第七章·一個農夫的故事 (5)
那年輕人見國王待他十分誠實坦白，向他提議，不能不即刻答覆，就稟告國王：“國王好意，同日頭一樣公正光明，我不敢借口拒絕。作太子事，容易商量。關於女人，我心有所主，雖死不移。若國王對這事有意幫忙，請簡派一個使臣，過我本國國王處，為我向他最小公主求婚。若得允許，我願意在此住下，為王當差；若不允許，我得走路。”
這國王聽說，當時就簡派大使，攜帶無數珍奇禮物，為年青人向那國王公主求婚。先前那個國王，素聞鄰國並無太子，心知必是那個賊人，就慨然應諾。但告使臣有一條件，必得履行，公主方可下嫁。這條件也並不算苛刻，只是應照禮法，到時必須太子自來迎親，方可發遣。使臣回國覆命時，就詳細稟告一切。…
