When Baby Superman falls into an unfriendly, hostile, or oppressive land, his outcome changes drastically from the traditional "Truth and Justice" archetype. Because DC Comics operates on a multiverse concept, writers have officially explored this "what if" scenario multiple times through Elseworlds and alternate-universe storylines.
Depending on exactly how "unfriendly" the land is, the outcomes generally fall into three distinct scenarios:
1.Weaponized by a Totalitarian State
If he lands in a hostile, authoritarian superpower, the state inevitably finds him, hides his alien origin, and raises him to be the ultimate weapon of propaganda and war.
The Soviet Union (Superman: Red Son): His pod lands on a collective farm in Soviet Ukraine instead of Kansas. He is raised as a loyal state asset under Joseph Stalin. He becomes a tool of state communism, fighting for "Stalin, socialism, and the international expansion of the Warsaw Pact". Though he still wants to do good, his lack of democratic values leads him to police human thought, lobotomize political dissidents, and turn the Earth into a hyper-controlled police state.
Nazi Germany (The Multiversity: Mastermen): His rocket crashes in Nazi-occupied territory in 1939. Adopted by Adolf Hitler, he is named Overman. His powers allow the Third Reich to win World War II and conquer the globe. Decades later, Overman is plagued by deep guilt over the Holocaust, but he remains trapped as the figurehead of a dystopian, fascist empire.
2.Imprisoned and Experimented On by the Military
If he lands in a country or territory that views him purely as an existential threat rather than a child, he never gets to see the sun.
Project Superman (Flashpoint): In this alternate timeline, his pod crashes directly into the middle of Metropolis, instantly destroying several city blocks. The United States government intercepts the infant immediately. Instead of being raised by loving parents, he is locked in a subterranean bunker under "Project Superman." He is starved of solar radiation, resulting in a severely emaciated, sickly, and traumatized child who has never seen the sky or spoken to another human being.
3.Starved or Killed in Infancy (The Dark Reality)
If the land is geographically or environmentally hostile, the infant's fate relies entirely on when his superpowers kick in.
In most comic continuities, Kryptonians do not develop their god-like powers until they grow older and absorb massive amounts of yellow solar radiation.
If his pod opens in a completely desolate, freezing, or toxic wilderness (such as the deep Arctic or a volcanic wasteland), or if he is found by a hostile tribe before his skin becomes invulnerable, he would simply die from exposure, starvation, or violence as a normal human infant would.
