有一種教育觀念自稱是根據發展的思想。但是，這個教育觀念，它一只手提出的東西，卻用另一只手收了回去。發展不被構想為繼續不斷的生長，而被視為潛在能力向特定的目標展開。這個目標又被設想為完全的、完美無缺的。任何階段的生活都沒有達到這個目標，只是向這個目標的展開。從邏輯上說，這個學說只是預備說的變種。實際上，這兩個理論的區別在於：預備說的追隨者重視青年正在準備的實際的和專業的職責，而發展說則提到正在展開的原則所具有的理想的和精神的特性。…

本章講到這裏，很少談到教育。我們一直在討論生長的條件和含義。但是，如果我們的結論是正確的，它們就包含明確的教育結果。當我們說教育就是發展時，全看對發展一詞怎樣理解。我們的最後結論是，生活就是發展；不斷發展，不斷生長，就是生活。用教育的術語來說，就是：①教育的過程，在它自身以外沒有目的；它就是它自己的目的。②教育的過程是一個不斷改組、不斷改造和不斷轉化的過程。…
