雷蒙德·卡佛:心靜如水
我那時正在理髮。我坐在理發椅上，有三個男人沿著墻根坐在我對面。①這等著理發的男人有兩個我以前從沒見過。但我認出了他們其中一個，盡管我不能確切地想起在哪裏見過他。理發師在我頭上忙活時我一直在看著他。那人把一根牙簽在嘴裏弄來弄去。他是一個體格健壯的男人，有著短短的卷發。然後我想起那天看到他一身制服制帽的打扮，在一家銀行的門廳裏，小眼睛很警惕的模樣。
另外兩個，一個年齡相當地大，滿頭的灰卷發。他正在吸煙。第三個男人，猜想年齡不會很大，卻幾乎禿頂了，兩邊的頭發垂掛在耳朵上面。他穿著伐木鞋，褲子沾著機油，油亮亮的。
理發師一只手放在我頭頂，把我轉過來細細端詳。然後他對那個門衛說，“你打到鹿了嗎，查爾斯？”…
