Take control of our own politics, Fuad Stephens’ daughter urges Sabahans

KOTA KINABALU: A daughter of one of Sabah’s founding fathers has called for Sabahans to unite and take control of the state’s own politics.

Fauziah Mohd Fuad Stephens, daughter of the late Tun Fuad Stephens, gathered with her friends at the memorial plaque of the formation of Malaysia in Kudat district, as a tribute to her late father and his works.

On the plaque are etched the words “this is the memorial for the formation of Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963” written in the native Rungus language.

“We are gathered here today because it means so much to the family. My late father, Tun Fuad Stephens, was the first Chief Minister of Sabah (once called Negara Sabah),” she said in a statement on Sunday (Sept 18).

Fauziah, who is also the Kudat division vice-chief for Parti Warisan, said her father had once told them that self-government was a stepping stone towards independence through Malaysia.

“Here we are today, having our history written and rewritten. We have gone through a lot being in Malaysia,” she said.

She said Sabah lost its “Negara” title in 1976, and became part of the states in the federation of Malaysia as state number 12.

Fauziah said Sabah has been placed under “emergency law” for more than four decades, losing control over its own oil and resources.

“We even lost our free political institution. We are one step forward, two steps backward in our progress towards independence.

“We have unfinished business to attend to, so we urge Sabahans to unite and take control over our own politics,” she said.

Fauziah said that with her father’s advice of self-government as a stepping stone, it is time to step up and complete the process.

She said Sept 16 is Malaysia Day but there is no song of victory coming for them yet.

“Malaysia Day has always been a sad remembrance in our family. Today, witnessed by everyone here, we plan to make Malaysia Day a victory for Sabah worth celebrating,” she said.

YOUTH GET POOR MARKS ON SABAH HISTORY

(From right to left) Sabah Maritime Silk Route Research and Advancement Society Youth Chief Desmond Chong, and youth committee members Tang Ting Yieng and Kwan Wai Git.

KOTA KINABALU: A civil society group here believes youth in the state have a poor grasp of Sabah’s history.

The assessment comes from the Sabah Maritime Silk Route Research and Advancement Society after paying tribute to leaders who perished in the Double Six air crash at Taman Chong Thien Vun Memorial in Trig Hill, Sandakan today.

The society’s Youth chief, Desmond Chong, said he and his delegation noticed that there was a lack of understanding on Sabah’s historical development among young people after they had struggled to speak about the topic.

As such, Chong said Sabah leaders and academic groups were obliged to discuss and share the state’s historical development such as from the colonisation period to the establishment of the Malaysian federation in 1963 to the young generation.

“This will create civic awareness and understanding that Sabah played an important role in the formation of Malaysia,” he said, in a statement.

He appealed to the younger generation not to forget the history of Sabah and the leaders who died fighting for the well-being of Sabahans.

“Although it has been 44 years since the crash, there are still some political leaders who remember this tragedy and attend the memorial.

“In regard to this, our youth division would like to remind the leaders of Sabah today not to forget the fighting spirit and sacrifice of former leaders for the betterment of the state,” Chong said.

The Double Six tragedy is a black episode in the state’s history, when a Sabah Air GAF Nomad aircraft crashed near a water village at Kampung Sembulan here on June 6, 1976, killing 11 people including ministers.

Among them were then Sabah Chief Minister Tun Fuad Stephens, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Finance Minister Datuk Salleh Sulong and Public Works and Communications Minister Chong Thien Vun.

Each year a memorial service is held to commemorate the anniversary of the crash at the Double Six Monument in Sembulan here.

Towards this end, Chong stressed it was imperative the younger generations understand the importance of the Double Six tragedy and Sabah’s other historical events. (June 8, 2020 https://www.borneotoday.net

人世間最悲痛的,是看黑白照中的歷史人物;

我們現在知道他們當中有人, 在短短幾個小時後,就會死去,並且死得悲涼而無對證;
