Yan Ran: Eastern Fence on the Maritime Silk Road

The Wharf

An old pier corner—
its pilings rot in the tide.
Someone once wept there;
someone sang.

Hemp ropes dragged out
lines of names—
written in the ship’s book,
erased from the shore’s.

White gulls sweep low,
as if searching for lost shadows.
When the sea withdraws,
salt stays on the stones—
and sound.

Historical Note:
Ports like Canton, Macao, Swatow, and Amoy
were gateways for Chinese laborers.
Though called “recruitments,”
they were often traffic in men.
Ruins and stone inscriptions remain—
the first marks of migration,
the scars of trade.

Marginalia:
Some harbors keep only the wind;
some, only the names.

The Unforgettable Photographic Masterpieces of the Late Harry Quah

A gentle remembrance—each frame still breathing,
each shadow holding the warmth of his gaze.
