Catherine Yen: 談簡約 On Simplicity

何謂「簡約」?

「簡約」並非捨棄細節,壓縮美感,

它是過濾不必要的繁複,

回歸設計美學的本質,

構思不過度浮誇或耗費,

並反映對人本質的尊重;

「簡約」就是少了浮面,

多了意義。

“What is simplicity?”

"Simplicity" does not give up the details, compress the beauty,

it filters the unnecessary complication,

returns to the essence of design aesthetics,

the idea is not exaggerated or over-consumed

and reflects the respect to the core of humanity.

"Simplicity” is more significant and less superficial.

Catherine Yen: 談好奇心

好奇心(curiosity)在拉丁文的意涵中

有謹慎的(careful),勤勉的 (diligent),求知慾的(curious)意思,

它是一種情感,一種自然而強烈的追根究底的行為,

例如探索、研究、學習等,這種情緒或情感,意欲

驅策一個人去瞭解新的事物;

好奇心是科學研究、藝術探索以及其他人類相關鍛鍊最主要的驅策力;

好奇心本身除了要有方向 (direction),

它還要能延伸(expansion)。

常常有人將「好奇心」掛在嘴上,或在字裡行間顯露這種企圖,

但如果好奇是徒然的文字宣示,

或者是一個人恆久關在腦袋狹窄空間裡的一個意念,

一個名詞,或者只讀同一類的書,或者根本不讀書,

也排斥結構深嚴的書,而他也只有同質性的朋友,

本身也沒 有跨領域的能力,那所有的企圖最後都是枉然的。

喬‧ 羅森布拉特( Joseph Rosenblatt b. 1933),加拿大詩人。他出過三本詩集「The LSD Leacock」(1966)、「Winter of the Luna Moth」(1968)、「Bumblebee Dithyramb」(1970)。

他常以各種詩意的熱情做演講,曾獲加拿大總督獎及安大略藝術協會獎;喬‧羅森布拉特也在多所加拿大的大學當駐校作家, 其詩作曾被翻譯成法文、荷文、瑞典、西班牙及義大利文。

他在1960年早期透過與Milton Acorn及 Gwendolyn MacEwen的交往而開始寫詩。在成為詩人之前,他做過焊接工、鉛管工人和鐵道工人。他除了寫詩,同時也是一位很有天分的畫家,也常為自己與詩人朋友的詩集畫插畫。

Catherine Yen: 喜歡讀書的人

喜歡讀書的人, 即使喜歡透過I Pad看世界,

然而,他/她或許更喜歡捧一本書,

嗅著它特殊、雋永的香氣,

讓眼睛耙梳在文字間所潛伏的脈搏裡,

讓裡頭的警句擊打你的心臟,

之興奮地一口氣吞嚥一本精彩的書。

與書相遇,由裡頭看到主人翁的風骨,

你記住他了,然後在別本書,他又再度出現,

於是這個相遇讓這個人的影像跳出書本,

站在你面前,訴說他在十九世紀的生死哀樂

這些人的氣質風華常像映照石頭的月光,

悠悠地帶你走過生命長河

而且他們經常與你同行,

且形塑今日作為你這個人的典範。

青銅騎士座下撒野的矯情與僭越
用你如雷的聲音 清掃
一個消退的世界
用新的手指 指向遠方

I Have Tasted My Blood by Milton Acorn

If this brain’s over-tempered
consider that the fire was want
and the hammers were fists
I’ve tasted my blood too much
to love what I was born to.

But my mother’s look
was a field of brown oats, soft-beared;
her voice rain and air rich with lilacs
and I loved her too much to like
how she dragged her days like a sled over gravel.

Playmates? I remember where their skulls roll!
One died hungry, gnawing grey perch-planks;
one fell, and landed so hard he splashed,
and many and many
come up atom by atom
in the worm-casts of Europe

My deep prayer a curse,
My deep prayer the promise that this won’t be
My deep prayer my cunning,
My love, my anger,
and often even my forgiveness
that this won’t be and be.
I’ve tasted my blood too much
to abide what I was born to.

奧登:一個傍晚我走出戶外 (translated by Catherine Yen)

走下布利司妥街道
人行道上的群眾
如豐收大麥的田野

沿著滿盈的河流往下走去
我聽到一個愛人唱著歌
在火車道的拱門下:
“愛沒有終點”

我會愛你,親愛的,我會愛你的
直到中國與非洲相遇
河流跳越高山
鮭魚在街上唱歌

我要愛你直到海洋
折疊並掛起來晾乾
七顆星嗄嗄叫著
像群鵝接近天際

時間將如白兔奔馳

詩人奧登 (Wystan Hugh Auden 1907-1973) 出生於英國,後入籍美國,被文學評論家認為是二十世紀最偉大的詩人之一。他的作品以風格及技巧成就為著,著墨於道德與政治的議題,以 及文體豐富的色彩、形式及內容,其詩的主題在愛情、政治、人民、宗教與道德、人與人之間的關係及大自然的世界。他是詩、散文、文學、政治、宗教、心裡學評 論的多產作家,也多次參與文件影片,劇本及其他型式的表演,在他有生之年,其作品曾引發爭論,但也具影響力。他去世後,其作品「藍調的喪 禮」"Funeral Blues" ("Stop all the clocks") 及「一九三九年九月一日」 ("September 1, 1939"), 透過影片、廣播及媒體而廣為人知。

You're betraying Poetry again, you'll tell me
Man’s most sacred expression
You're using it again as a means, a pack-mule
