[iCONADA Research Team]From Generational Wisdom to Generative Creativity : The Cognitive Orphans: Identity Reconstruction and Cultural Dislocation in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract: The rapid escalation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transcended mere technological innovation, catalyzing a profound epistemic rupture. This essay conceptualizes contemporary humanity as "cognitive orphans"—a generation stripped of ancestral guidance, historical precedents, and traditional epistemological frameworks. By examining the collapse of generational wisdom, the deconstruction of authoritative knowledge, and the crisis of human exceptionalism, this paper analyzes how this existential isolation reshapes cultural identity. Ultimately, it argues that while the orphan state induces deep existential anxiety, it simultaneously offers an unprecedented tabula rasa for redefining human value and agency.

1.Introduction: The Epistemic Rupture

Throughout history, human cultural evolution has been cumulative. Each generation inherited a cognitive scaffolding from its predecessors, relying on a lineage of accumulated wisdom to navigate technological transitions—from the printing press to the industrial assembly line. However, the advent of generative and autonomous Artificial Intelligence has broken this chain of transmission.

Faced with a technology that evolves at an exponential rate, humanity finds itself in a state of sudden, radical isolation. In the cognitive landscape of the AI era, almost every individual exists as an orphan—devoid of conceptual ancestry, stripped of historical analogies, and forced to confront an alien intelligence without parental guidance from the past.

2.The Collapse of Generational Wisdom

The primary characteristic of the "cognitive orphan" is the immediate obsolescence of ancestral guidance. Historically, the older generation acted as cultural and professional anchors, passing down heuristics, ethical boundaries, and survival strategies.AI disrupts this hierarchy in two fundamental ways:

The Velocity of Change: Traditional wisdom relies on linear time and stable environments. AI operates on exponential curves, rendering multi-decadal experience irrelevant overnight.

The Reversal of Mentorship: For the first time, youth and technical adaptability supersede seniority. Parents and educators can no longer reliably predict the skills required for the future, leaving the younger generation to navigate existential threats entirely unguided.

3.The Deconstruction of Authoritative Knowledge

To be an orphan is also to lose the institutional "homes" that previously validated truth and identity. The democratization and synthetic generation of knowledge via AI have dismantled traditional epistemic authorities.

The Erosion of Expertise

Historically, knowledge was guarded and verified by institutions—universities, publishing houses, and peer networks. Large Language Models (LLMs) have decentralized information retrieval, yet they synthesize output through opaque "black box" algorithms. When authority is replaced by a probabilistic matrix, the individual is cast out of the structured house of verified truth, forced to independently discern reality from hallucination.

The Fragmented Reality

As AI-generated content (AIGC) saturates the cultural ecosystem, the shared objective reality that binds a society together dissolves. Cognitive orphans must navigate a hyper-individualized information landscape where truth is tailored to the user, fracturing the collective cultural narratives that once provided societal cohesion.

4.The Crisis of Human Exceptionalism

Beyond professional and intellectual displacement, the orphan metaphor highlights an existential isolation. For centuries, human culture was built on the foundation of human exceptionalism—the belief that creativity, logic, and linguistic mastery were divine or uniquely biological traits.

As AI mirrors and surpasses human capabilities in these domains, humanity experiences a profound psychological displacement:

The Loss of Unique Agency: When machine output matches or eclipses human artistic and analytical creation, the intrinsic value of human labor is thrown into question.

Existential Alienation: Stripped of the illusion of cognitive monopoly, the human subject feels abandoned by the universe, marooned on a planet where biological intelligence is no longer the pinnacle of cognitive processing.

5.Conclusion: From Isolation to Autonomy

To declare that humanity is "cognitively orphaned" by AI is not a counsel of despair, but an acknowledgment of radical freedom. The orphan, though vulnerable and disoriented, is entirely unburdened by the dogmas and structural limitations of past paradigms.
The current generational cohort occupies a unique, liminal space in human history. As the first generation of cognitive orphans, we are tasked with writing the initial pages of a new cultural playbook. The challenge ahead does not lie in a futile attempt to resurrect dead ancestral frameworks, but in embracing this radical autonomy to forge a new philosophy of human dignity, co-existence, and purpose in a symbiotic world.(Reviewed by Dr. Tan Beng Huat)
