周憲：視覺文化：從傳統到現代（9）
本雅明注意到，機械復制技術的出現，導致了視覺文化的深刻變革。因為“技術復制能把原作的摹本，帶到原作本身無法達到的境界”，這便導致了傳統的“大動蕩” (註：本雅明：《機械復制時代的藝術作品》，浙江攝影出版社1993年版，第6、7頁。)。
當藝術進入機械復制時代以後，傳統藝術品那種稀罕、難以接近的狀況徹底改變了。圖像生產技術，尤其是機械復制技術的出現，使得圖像生產方式，發生了根本性的變革。《西斯廷聖母》不再是非得到梵蒂岡才能看到的稀罕之物，如今它廣泛地復制在各種形式的圖像材料中，在畫冊中，在仿制品中，甚至在文化衫上。
伯格進一步發展了本雅明的思想，他強調指出：
