一切感情都可以導致愛情，導致熱烈愛慕，一切的感情：
憎恨，憐憫，冷漠，崇敬，友誼，畏懼，——甚至蔑視。是的，一切的感情……只是除了感謝以外。
感謝——這是債務；任何人都可以擺出自己的一些債務……但愛情——不是金錢。

純樸！純樸！人們把你叫作神聖的。可是，神聖——這不是人類的事。
謙遜——這才是。它抑制著，它戰勝著驕傲。但不要忘記：
勝利感本身就蘊藏著自己的驕傲。

我憐憫我自己，別人，所有的人，野獸，鳥類……一切有生命之物。
我憐憫孩子們和老年人，不幸者和幸運者……憐憫幸運者甚於不幸者。
我憐憫常勝的、凱旋的首領們，憐憫偉大的藝術家，思想家詩人們。
我憐憫殺人犯和他的受害者，憐憫醜與美，憐憫被壓迫者和壓迫者。
我怎樣從這憐憫中解脫出來呢？它不讓我安穩地生活……。
它，還有這煩惱。…

我害怕，我避免空話；但對空話的畏懼——也是一種自負。
於是，在這兩個外來詞之間，在自負與空話之間，我們複雜的生活在流逝著和變動著。
