孔雀湖上遊有一片茂密的蘆葦叢，每年秋天，會有一群短嘴天鵝從北方飛來過冬。短嘴天鵝又稱小天鵝，體形比大天鵝和疣（yóu）鼻天鵝要小一些。它們全身潔白，嘴喙橙紅，顯得雍容華貴。這群短嘴天鵝約有四五十只，在孔雀湖上遊的蘆葦叢裏生活四個月左右，第二年開春，便飛回北方去繁殖後代。…

《沈石溪動物傳奇故事》の 斑馬與橄欖枝
也許是因為路途勞頓，也許是因為水土不服，也許是因為思念家鄉過度悲傷，也許是因為昆明溫差太大著了涼，那皮名叫迪奧的雄斑馬從非洲草原運到圓通山動物園後的第二天就病倒了。經獸醫檢查，它患的是急性肺炎，打針灌藥，折騰了好幾天，不見好轉，仍每天臥在地上，無神的眼睛望著天上的白雲，一副病懨懨的樣子。獸醫說，光大針灌藥效果是有限的，病馬老是側身躺著，壓迫著肺部，只會加重病情，必須讓它站起來，多活動活動，振奮精神，增強體質，配合治療，病才可能痊愈。
沒想到，要讓雄斑馬迪奧站起來，簡直比登天還難。幾個人費了九牛二虎之力把它擡起來站直了，剛一松手，咕咚，它就像一坨濕泥巴一樣，四腿一曲，跪癱在地。用鞭子抽它的屁股，直抽的屁股上布滿一條條紅蚯蚓似的血痕，它呻吟著，眼睛裏閃爍著淚光，但就是不肯站起來。在馬頭套上轡籠，用韁繩拉，也無濟於事。…
