道德律的力，本來是民眾賦予的；在民眾的面前，自然更顯出它的威嚴了。我這時一面盼望，一面卻感到了兩重的禁制：一，在通俗的意義上，接近妓者總算一種不正當的行為；二，妓是一種不健全的職業，我們對於她們，應有哀矜勿喜之心，不應賞玩的去聽她們的歌。在眾目睽睽之下，這兩種思想在我心里最為旺盛。她們暫時壓倒了我的聽歌的盼望，這便成就了我的灰色的拒絕。那時的心實在異常狀態中，覺得頗是昏亂。歌舫去了，暫時寧靖之後，我的思緒又如潮湧了。兩個相反的意思在我心頭往復：賣歌和賣淫不同，聽歌和狎妓不同，又干道德甚事？—但是，但是，她們既被逼的以歌為業，她們的歌必無藝術味的；況她們的身世，我們究竟該同情的。所以拒絕倒也是正辦。但這些意思終於不曾撇開我的聽歌的盼望。它力量異常堅強；它總想將別的思緒踏在腳下。從這重重的爭斗里，我感到了濃厚的不足之感。這不足之感使我的心盤旋不安，起坐都不安寧了。唉！我承認我是一個自私的人！平伯呢，卻與我不同。他引周啟明先生的詩，因為我有妻子，所以我愛一切的女人，因為我有子女，所以我愛一切的孩子。…
