In much the same way that NACTO's "Urban Bikeway Design Guide" helped cities implement projects like protected bike lanes, which aren't included in more conservative engineering manuals, the Urban Streets Design Guide will help accelerate the adoption of a range of multi-modal improvements, from bus lanes to curbside public spaces. As NYC DOT chief and NACTO President Janette Sadik The Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (OMUTCD) is to be used in conjunction with this guide. The MDG is not intended to be a detailed design or traffic engineering manual that could supersede the need for application of sound principles by knowledgeable design or traffic engineering professionals. The new manual on the best practices aims to save lives and make walking and biking more comfortable for people of all ages and abilities. The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) has published a set of recommendations for updating the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) "into a proactive, multimodal safety regulation" as the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) moves to update the document.. According to NACTO, "a reframed MUTCD is instrumental in pushing for safer, more sustainable, and The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) is a coalition of the Departments of Transportation in North American cities.. Founded in 1996, NACTO has participated in a number of research initiatives dealing with surface transportation in urban areas. Past campaigns have focused on bicycling, bus rapid transit, light rail, bike share, and freight. The NACTO guide has only been endorsed by two other states, Washington and Massachusetts. "Endorsing NACTO basically says this manual can be used alongside the Highway Design Manual and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices as an appropriate reference when you're looking at possibilities" for new street designs," said Dougherty. NACTO Guide was developed using on-line collaboration tools, with full colour, three-dimensional graphics and the input of bikeway design professionals from throughout the U.S. For many years, urban designers in the U.S. had been limited by the current national standards produced by the federal government (the Manual of Uniform Traffic The NACTO guide has only been endorsed by two other states, Washington and Massachusetts. "NACTO's guide is far ahead of the industry standard, old-guard manuals: the Federal Highway Administration's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials' design guidelines. NACTO's Urban Bikeway Design Guide was the first to provide engineering guidance for protected bike lanes." Manuals & Design Guides Pedestrian and Bicycle Information
