他拿出全部的家底，向馬來王族承包了大片山地，搞山林開發。他又以房子為抵押，向銀行貸款，買了四臺推土機，請了一批工人，自己也親自上陣，用推土機開路，伐樹墾地，清理好一片山地就賣給他人搞種植園，接著開發第二片。
每天頂著星光出門，踏著月色歸家，連續苦幹了五六年，不僅還清了銀行貸款，而且有了頗為可觀的資本。他看準了經濟高速發展時期土地的增值潛力，沒有什麽財富比土地更有投資價值了。1989年，他大手筆買下了一百五十吉（一吉相當於六畝）土地，用於種植油棕和橡膠。他從此有了自己的種植園。…

溫錦昌排行第五，六歲時隨父母從彭亨搬到森美蘭。那時所有的膠農和伐木工都住茅寮，他家人多，搭的茅寮是芙蓉鎮最大的。家中的生活十分清苦，孩子們很小就隨父母去割膠，天不亮就出發，父母在前面割，他們睡眼惺忪跟在後面收。茫茫無邊的膠林，前不見頭，後不見尾，膠水仿佛永遠也收不完。
膠農的收入太低，錦昌不願意像父母那樣一輩子困在膠林。1960年，十六歲的他初中畢業了。在母親憂郁的目光中，他決心離家獨自去闖蕩，為了改變自己，也改變全家的命運。他走進了比膠林更遠更深更少人跡的莽莽大森林。…
