朱棣派胡濙尋訪張三豐，是由於朱元璋“遣使覓之不得”才又進行的。而且胡濙帶著朱棣的“璽書”，準確無疑。我們今天可以看到當年修建的巍峨的武當山道觀，已被稱為道教南方第一叢林。所以，說朱棣派胡濙去訪張三豐就是去訪張三豐，並非托言，不像尋訪建文帝只是猜測的、可能的。
另一件事的發生，就使關於建文帝的傳說，越傳越亂。那就是楊應祥的出現。

3．神秘的胡濙、張三豐
既然合法的皇帝下落不明，篡位的皇帝派人到處訪察其下落，就顯得合情合理了。一些人雖然不相信建文帝在各地流亡的種種傳說，但卻也懷疑建文帝並沒死於大火，而是在亂中逃出了皇宮。於是像明朝沈德符等人的一些書中，便出現了這樣的說法：
少帝（建文帝）自地道出也，蹤跡甚秘，以故文皇帝（明成祖朱棣）遣胡濙托訪張三豐為名，實疑其匿他方起事。至遣太監鄭和浮海，遍歷諸國而終不得影響。則天位雖不終，而自全之智有足多者。
晚明黃景昉的《國史唯疑》卷之一也這樣說：…
