我害怕自己，害怕那種感覺，因為我對它毫無防御能力，每時每刻都在由它任意擺布。這是生命中最可怕的一部分，它充滿了恐怖。……生活不過是受折磨而已。……生命已變成一座監獄。……我渴望著被蹂躪，並且實際上我每時每刻都在蹂躪我自己。
她從一家精神病院轉到另一家精神病院，從這個心理醫生找到那個心理專家，但是都無濟於事。她幾次試圖自殺，但是都未遂。最後被送到了貝爾惟尤療養院，成為賓斯旺格的病人。在賓斯旺格的照顧下，她似乎開始變得平靜和舒適，並且奇跡般的開始進食。飲食的規律加上鎮靜劑的作用，她的身體恢復了一些，人也精神了很多。…

陳矮·賓斯旺格·存在主義心理學 中
案例：1944年，賓斯旺格發表了一篇臨床報告，叫做「愛倫·維斯特的案例」（The Case of Ellen West），報告裡講述了一個同時患有厭食症、憂郁症、強迫症和自殺傾向的可憐女人，讀來令人震驚。最終，愛倫的故事成為賓斯旺格的經典案例。
愛倫小時候是一個熱情洋溢的女孩。她很善於表達自己內心深處的欲望和對自由的向往。她喜歡看書，喜歡寫詩。只要是她感興趣的，她都會力爭第一。就像在學校裡，她總是希望自己的成績排名第一。但是她非常挑食，一旦有人讓她吃不喜歡的食物，她就會表現出強烈的反抗情緒。…
