這與我們過去接受的啟蒙教育（黑暗的中世紀、野蠻的遠古時代）是大相徑庭的。弗洛伊德向我們展示了一個文化發展越高、壓抑越重、心理症越多的文明圖景，他曾把一個城市過去的歷史比作心理的過去，如羅馬就是一個有著悠久多變歷史的心理實體。可能有人以為，筆者不應該從近代繪畫、城市和人的身體的異常推演到整個近代西方文明。按照近代西方傳統，藝術對社會是無直接利害關係的，這就否定了藝術與社會及人的行為的密切關係，現代人缺少的不就是維柯所說的"各民族創建者具有的詩人的本性"嗎？…
