（二）教育目的
杜威認為：以未來生活為教育目的有三個缺點：
(1)容易喪失現有的動機；
(2)容易使兒童養成懶惰和因循延宕的習慣；
(3)容易忽略兒童的個性。
杜威說：「教育的目的是包含在被教育者的生活過程中，生活是不斷地連續發展，所以把各時期各過程的生活充分的生長就是下期生活的最好準備，除此之外並無其他的教育目的（葉學志，民74）。綜言之，杜威主張教育沒有普遍的目的，認為生長是自自然然的，沒有目的，亦不涉及規範的價值判斷。教育既如花木之生長，自不能給它加上一外在的特定目的（郭秋勳，民74）。
