幸而，我們可以說，這種區分也是不必要的。我們已經講過，這些宗教象征、部落徽章、產業標記以及字形等裝潢，除掉實際用途以外，都有審美的作用存在。所以，我們可以把它們看作主要裝潢之外的次要的裝潢。
為了不要重復，我們在此地就單舉一個例來說明吧。我們來談一談繪畫文字，那是離純粹的裝潢最遠的。我們不必舉中世紀的燙金字體，或文藝復興時代印刷品上的頭號字體，來證明文字的美術性質。
只要看看逐日送來的任何信件——只要不是出於村夫或書法大家之手的——就可明白了。書法的第一條件是清楚；但是還有旁的條件也是重要的。譬如某商人要征求一個助理員，他不但要求他書法端整，而且還須寫得漂亮。
就是不以謄寫為職業的人，也喜歡寫得清晰美麗——除非他們在學校時代就得了一種觀念，以為寫得最粗劣的字體，就是天才的明證。…
