誘致人們將自己裝飾起來的最大的、最有力的動機，無疑是為了想取得別人的喜悅。我們總覺得裝飾是女性的天然權利，但在最低的文化階段上，卻總是男人比之女人更事修飾。102這種奇觀，初看似乎是一個違背我們理論的憑證，其實正是很有利於我們理論的一個左證。
低級民族的裝飾區分和高級動物間的區分相同，因為，它們同是受著男性是處在求愛者的地位這個事實所支配的。在原始民族間，和在高等動物間一樣，是沒有老處女的。女人無論如何，總可以結婚，而男人卻須用盡方法，才能得到一個生活伴侶。
例如在澳洲，大部分的青年男人都必須過很久的獨身生活。而在文明社會里，關係恰恰相反。誠然，在名義上求愛者還是男人，但在事實上卻往往是女人在那兒求愛，因此女人就不得不從事裝飾，而男人卻大都不大注意自己的裝飾。…
