美國哲學家凱爾納《媒介文化》在媒介文化中，形象、聲音和景觀，有助於生產出日常生活的構架，它支配著閑暇時間，塑造著種種政治觀點和社會行為，提供了人們構造自己身份的種種素材.......它是一種形象的文化，往往利用視覺和聽覺。諸多媒介——廣播、電影、電視、音樂、以及雜誌、報紙、和卡通畫等印刷媒介——要麽突出視覺，要麽突出聽覺，或是將兩者混合起來，以廣泛地作用於各種情緒、情感和觀念。（見周憲《反抗人為的視覺暴力——關於一個視覺文化悖論的思考》）
