The 2024 animated film The Wild Robot resonated deeply with audiences not merely because of its stunning visual artistry and emotionally compelling narrative, but because it addresses one of the defining cultural anxieties of the twenty-first century: as artificial intelligence rapidly advances, will humanistic values be diminished? Will technology ultimately alienate humanity, or could it help us rediscover what it truly means to be human?

From the perspective of cultural and creative studies, The Wild Robot offers a remarkably insightful answer. The true significance of artificial intelligence may not lie in surpassing human beings, but in helping humanity re-examine and reaffirm its own humanistic essence.

機器人教鳥兒重拾失傳旋律

南美各地都能聽見紅領帶鵐的歌聲。然而,年輕的鳴禽已不再學習長輩的旋律──直到科學家介入。

雄紅領帶鵐(rufous-collared sparrow)的鳴唱是南美洲最獨特的聲音之一。這種小型鳥類──淺棕色,或偏白帶黑斑──以短短幾秒唱出牠們的旋律,由二到四個導引音及結尾顫音組成。每個紅領帶鵐家族都有自己獨特的歌曲,家族成員會終其一生鳴唱這首歌。但首先,牠們要學會怎麼唱。

這種行為根植在幼年雄鳥與成年雄鳥之間的互動,由成年雄鳥傳唱牠們的歌曲。但當這種學習遭到中斷──無論是棲地喪失、族群衰退,還是作為「鳥教師」的成年個體消失──會發生什麼事呢?

20202023年間,布宜諾斯艾利斯大學精確與自然科學學院的研究人員接下了一件大膽的任務:將一首早已在野外消失、僅存於1960年代樂譜記錄中的歌,重新教給紅領帶鵐族群。科學家運用結合了先進科技的創新作法,研發出一個「機器人導師」──這是一種能夠播放這段失落旋律的裝置,供幼鳥從中學習。結果,生活在布宜諾斯艾利斯佩雷拉伊拉奧拉公園(Pereyra Iraola Park)這片約25英畝的自然保護區內的紅領帶鵐,不僅學會了這段合成的鳥鳴,還將其融入自己的歌曲資料庫,現在他們唱得可得意了。

紅領帶鵐是全球已知4000種鳴禽之一。雖說牠們的鳴唱在某方面受遺傳條件影響,但雄性紅領帶鵐的歌聲主要是透過學習而來,通常由鳥爸爸擔任導師。幼鳥會模仿發音,唱出結合家族曲調和族群曲調的歌。(像是拉布拉他河地區的紅領帶鵐就不會唱其他地區紅領帶鵐歌曲的結尾顫音。)這個學習過程從出生後開始,大約持續三個月。一開始,幼鳥的肌肉控制還不是那麼精準,但到了最後,牠就能唱出修飾得很好的旋律。

通常每隻鳥兒只會唱一首歌,不過有些個體也能唱兩首、甚至三首。旋律僅持續兩到三秒,但會從日出時分開始不斷重複,唱到日正當中。

「那是很獨特的歌──就像指紋一樣,不過是習得的。」阿瑪多說:「目的是要吸引雌鳥,並保護自己的勢力範圍。這是一種表達『這是我,而我就在這裡』的方式。」

失落的旋律如何復得

多虧了紐約洛克斐勒大學榮退教授、阿根廷鳥類學家費南多.諾特博姆(Fernando Nottebohm)的手寫音符,研究人員才會知道1960年代的佩雷拉伊拉奧拉公園裡最流行的歌。「如果他注意到上揚的頻率,就會用上升的記號標註,」明德林說:「如果是往下,變得更低,他就會畫一個向下記號。顫音是一組短線,他就是這麼紀錄這首歌的。」

觸發這番探索的是這個問題:1960年代的熱門歌曲中,有哪一首還在傳唱?研究團隊前往公園,錄下各種旋律,然後訓練了一個神經網絡去核對有哪一首老歌還在流行、又有哪些已經消失。他們發現,這個地區只剩三首經典老歌還有鳥在唱。其中一個可能原因,就是公園周邊地區的都市化,讓當地許多紅領帶鵐族群流離失所;另一個原因是過去這些年裡,有許多其他種類的鳴禽入侵公園,搶走了紅領帶鵐的地盤。

決定重新恢復已經消失的曲調之後,這些科學家分析了每一首真實歌曲的參數──每個音符的起始和結束頻率,延續長度……等等──然後生成一個數學模型,可以根據鳥類發聲的物理機制產出那曲旋律的合成版本。為了達成這個目的,他們模擬了鳥類的聲道,包括氣管、口咽腔和鳥喙。團隊甚至還觀察了鳥類的發聲器官「鳴管肌肉」的活動。

他們把這段合成歌曲在同一座公園內播放給紅領帶鵐聽,時間就選在這個物種的關鍵感知時期:從10月到次年2月,也就是幼鳥經由模仿聲音範本來學習的時期。課程會在鳴唱高峰期間播放,也就是早晨,最多只播放八小時。合成歌曲的播放間隔,設定得比鳥類的自然鳴唱稍短,以刺激發聲反應。

「每段歌聲之間的間隔是隨機的,這樣鳥兒才會把區域內三台播放設備播放的聲音當作真正的交流,就像牠們在回應彼此一樣。」比斯妥說。

2月到7月間,紅領帶鵐會因為低溫而完全沉默,這種情況至少會持續到9月。之後牠們又會重拾發聲練習,並持續根據學習範本修飾自己的歌。令人驚訝的是,有些年輕的紅領帶鵐選擇了機器人導師,學會了這首已經失傳的旋律,將之融入自己的音樂曲目中。

幼鳥學會的旋律在音節之間,是以上升和下降的頻率相連,與合成版本的旋律一致。然而,最後一個下降的音節,其頻率範圍比合成版本的更廣──公園裡錄到的所有成鳥歌聲都有這個特徵。這樣的變化似乎是這個紅領帶鵐族群「方言」的獨特標誌,可能是跟其他真正的導師學來的,或是這個物種遺傳編碼的表現。

「這就像是拯救了一種被遺忘的古老語。」明德林說,並強調文化特徵──無論是鳥兒還是人類的──都可以透過學習和跨世代教學而復興。
聲音保存的未來

明德林、阿瑪多和比斯妥堅信,他們的工具擁有保存野鳥鳴唱資料庫的潛力。

「有具備大型冷凍庫的基因庫。那文化的保存呢?我們不應該設置一個歌曲錄音的資料庫嗎?」阿瑪多說:「我們的工作為更全面性地思考物種保育鋪了路。」

INFINA團隊目前已經開始研究阿根廷南部的紅領帶鵐和其他鳥類,短期目標:設計一個神經網絡,以協助自動辨識個別鳥兒的鳴唱。下一步就是研究一個已上環鳥兒族群的鳴唱傳播。

「個體的消失不僅代表基因多樣性的減少,也代表真正文化的流失,」明德林說:「我們把數學方程式轉成音波,就能確保這個文化不會失落。」
