“Happiness and Sense of Community Belonging in the World Value Survey”Analysis by ICONADA Research Team
The research paper“Happiness and Sense of Community Belonging in the World Value Survey”offers an important contribution to the growing body of literature examining the relationship between social connectedness and subjective wellbeing.
Drawing on data from more than 120,000 respondents across 74 countries in the World Value Survey (2017–2020), the study demonstrates that individuals who feel a stronger sense of belonging to their communities are generally more likely to report higher levels of happiness.
By exploring multiple layers of belonging — including connection to one’s city, region, country, continent, and the world — the authors provide a broader understanding of how social identity and emotional attachment shape human wellbeing across diverse cultural contexts. (ScienceDirect)
One of the study’s most significant findings is that closeness to one’s city emerged as the strongest predictor of happiness. This suggests that people derive the greatest emotional benefits from social environments that are immediate, familiar, and personally meaningful. Cities often represent places where individuals build friendships, establish routines, create memories, and develop a sense of identity. The emotional attachment people form with their local communities appears to foster feelings of support, security, pride, and social integration, all of which contribute positively to wellbeing. This finding reinforces earlier psychological theories emphasizing that humans possess an inherent need for belonging and interpersonal connection.
The study also revealed that broader forms of identification — such as feeling connected to one’s country, continent, and even the world — were positively associated with happiness, although their effects were weaker than local attachment. These results indicate that wellbeing is not only influenced by intimate or immediate relationships but also by larger collective identities that provide people with meaning and social purpose.
Feeling connected to humanity at a global level may encourage empathy, solidarity, and optimism, especially during periods of social uncertainty or crisis. At the same time, national and continental belonging can strengthen feelings of cultural pride and shared experience, further supporting emotional wellbeing.
Interestingly, the only domain that did not significantly predict happiness was connection to one’s region. The authors suggest that this may reflect ambiguity in how respondents interpreted the term “region.” Unlike cities or countries, regions may vary widely in meaning depending on geography, culture, or political organization. Some participants may have understood the term as referring to a province or state, while others may have interpreted it more loosely. This inconsistency likely weakened the reliability of the findings for this variable and highlights the importance of clear conceptual definitions in cross-cultural survey research.
Another major strength of the study lies in its methodological approach. By controlling for demographic factors such as age, sex, education, income, and urban or rural residence, the researchers were able to show that social connectedness independently contributes to happiness beyond socioeconomic circumstances alone. This suggests that emotional and social dimensions of life are just as critical to wellbeing as material conditions. In an increasingly digital and individualistic world, the findings emphasize that happiness cannot be understood solely through economic success or personal achievement; meaningful social relationships and a sense of belonging remain central to human flourishing.
The paper also opens important directions for future research. The authors acknowledge that the study did not examine other potentially influential forms of connectedness, such as attachment to family, friends, neighborhoods, or online communities. Additionally, cultural differences between collectivist and individualist societies may shape how people experience belonging and happiness. Future studies could explore these differences in greater depth, as well as investigate how loneliness, sadness, and social isolation relate to weakened community ties.
Overall, the study concludes that stronger feelings of social connectedness are consistently linked with greater happiness across much of the world. Its findings reinforce the idea that human wellbeing is deeply social in nature and that fostering inclusive, supportive, and connected communities may play a vital role in improving quality of life on both local and global scales.
