“這麽早我從不開玩笑的。好，在我們去找法蘭岑之前，我們先去哪兒？塞納河還是鐵塔？”
塞納河贏了。他們一過八點便離開酒店——不巧的是，沒幾分鐘之後，一通電話打來說要找派因先生，想要更改早上的安排。門僮沖到大道上，希望能傳達這則訊息，不過晚了一步。在上班潮流的人群當中，已見不到派因的蹤影。
如往常般，他們采取另類路線，經由後街抵達安德烈最喜愛的巴黎角落，也就是布奇街附近，在這里，每一天都是市集日。

“這一夜我永遠不會忘記，”法蘭岑說道。“你們的熱情、你們的房間、你們的服務——精致極了。”
服務員點起香煙，外表看不出來他已被法蘭岑的贊美所感動。“你有沒有洗澡？”
“浴室里沒毛巾。”
“我有毛巾。二十法郎。”

假若床鋪看起來稍稍吸引人，或甚至衛生一點，他有可能把這通電話留到隔天早上再打。相反的，手中抓著聯絡薄，他無精打采地下樓到櫃枱，後者的眼睛幾乎未從特大的折疊插頁擡起，他將電話推向法蘭岑，然後啟動桌上計算時間和費用的小機器。
霍爾茲在響了一聲之後便拿起話筒。
“你在哪里？把房間號碼給我。”’
“不用了。這個地方我只待一晚。告訴我出了什麽情況。”…
