人人皆知語言是多變的。即使是同一世代、同一地區的兩個人，講著完全相同的方言，並且活躍於同一個社交圈，他們的語言習慣也從未完全一致。對每個人的語言進行仔細研究，都會發現無數的細微差異——在詞彙選擇上、句子結構上、特定形式或詞組組合的使用頻率上、特定元音和輔音以及元音和輔音組合的發音上，還有所有那些賦予口語生命的特徵，如速度、重音和語調。從某種意義上說，他們講的是同一語言的略微不同的方言，而不是完全相同的語言。…

愛德華·薩丕爾Edward Sapir（1884－1939）
1884 年，愛德華·薩丕爾(Edward Sapir) 出生於普魯士勞恩堡（今波蘭倫堡）的猶太家庭，但從 1890 年舉家搬往美國後便再未回到歐洲。1901 年 Sapir 進入哥倫比亞大學主修日耳曼語，1903 年獲得學士學位，再一年後獲得文學碩士學位，大三時他接觸了 Boas 與人類學，逐漸「轉換門庭」進入人類學領域。…
