蔡羽《華人在大馬砂拉越歷史足跡：劉直與廣惠肇公會》
華人在砂拉越的身影，就考古的發現來說，最早可以推測到中國唐宋時期，在砂拉越河灌入南中國海沖擊而成的三角洲地區——山都望(Santubong)，曾經有個華人聚居的繁華商港。這個商港在元朝時期沒落，到了明朝時期則時有鄭和船員在沿海活動並與當地人通婚的說法。再以古晉大伯公廟為例，建廟年份至今仍是謎，有說可以推算到1800年前後，如果屬實，那華人在砂拉越也肯定早於這個年份。
然而這些都是“身影”，模糊不清，考證工作甚為艱難。
比較清楚的英文記錄，也得到官方認可的，是廣東人劉直與其同鄉在1830年(清道光…
