Momogun 詩男對“我的加雅街杜順公主”這麼介紹這座鐘塔～～

我們以前不叫沙巴，而是叫北婆羅洲；首府這裡也不叫哥打京那巴魯，各民族都叫她亞庇，Api-Api，也就是土語的“火”的意思。

據說跟當年在海岸線外，捕魚人家看見的燈火有關，另一說法是，對面島曾發生大火。這名字多活、多火。

洋人來了，說他們發現了亞庇，所以要改名哲斯頓（Jesselton）；馬來政府來了，就改叫哥打京那巴魯，他們不知道，哥打，是城的意思；京那巴魯，就是支那巴魯，中國寡婦的意思～～～。

好吧，少囉唆，還是說洋人來了的事；哲斯頓的第一任縣長是法蘭西斯喬治艾京生（Francis George Atkinson)，他在1901年正月上任。

英俊倜儻的他在北婆羅洲洋人圈子裡，是挺受歡迎的，大家叫他“西海岸的小艾”（West Coast Atky）。可惜，他不長命啊，只做了不到兩年的縣長，就在1902年12月初染上瘧疾，28歲客死異鄉。

最傷心的是他的母親瑪麗埃迪特女士，決定在亞庇最主要的高地巴萊士山（Brace Hill)上，建立一座鐘樓紀念他。塔邊一條上下山地的路也以他為名。

今天，當然已經不是洋人當家了，山，就改叫升旗山（Signal Hill）；路，叫王宮路。鐘塔在1905年啟用，從建成到1956年，它一直都是進入亞庇港口的船只辨識方向的導航標誌。

直到今天，它的鐘聲還是每隔一個小時就響起一次。在手錶、鐘錶不很普及的年代，它把作息時間、趕火車趕船、接火車接船的時間，告訴整個亞庇市區的人。

說也奇怪，在二戰時的空襲中，整個亞庇被夷平了，只剩下三棟建築。最古老的，就是這座艾京森鐘塔。

The Atkinson Clock Tower is the oldest standing structure in Kota Kinabalu. It was originally known as the Atkinson Memorial Clock Tower and sits in solitary on the bluff along Signal Hill Road overlooking this seaside city and capital of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.

The clock tower was built in the memory of Francis George Atkinson, Jesselton’s first district officer who died of Malaria or ‘Borneo Fever’ at the age of 28 in December 1902. His mother Mrs Mary Edith Atkinson presented a two-faced clock to Jesselton town as a tribute to the memory of her son and it was decided later that a clock tower would be built in his honor. The structure was commissioned on 20th April 1905. A road was also named after him – Atkinson Drive, now renamed as Jalan Istana that links Tuaran Road over the ridge and downtown Kota Kinabalu.
