17、不要像仿佛你將活一千年那樣行動。死亡窺伺著你。當你活著，當善是在你力量範圍之內，你行善吧。
18、那不去探究他的鄰人說什麽、做什麽或想什麽，而只注意他自己所做的，注意那公正和純潔的事情的人，或者像厄加刺翁所說，那不環顧別人的道德墮落，而只是沿著正直的道路前進的人，為自己免去了多少煩惱啊！
19、那對身後的名聲有一強烈欲望的人，沒有想到那些回憶他的人自己很快也都要死去，然後他們的子孫也要死去，直到全部的記憶都通過那些愚蠢地崇拜和死去的人們而終歸湮滅無聞。但假設那些將記住他的人甚至是永生不死的，因而這記憶將是記恒的，那麽這對你又意味著什麽呢？我不說這對死者意味著什麽，而是說這對生者意味著什麽。讃揚，除非它的確有某種用途，此外還是什麽呢？由於你現在不合宜地拒絕了自然的這一禮物，而依附於別的一些事物……
