摩洛哥北部古城、海港丹吉爾 (Tangier)，位於非洲大陸西北角進入直布羅陀海峽的入口處，同歐洲大陸隔海相望，座落在世界交通的十字路口。
東進地中海和西出大西洋的船隻，從這里經過或停泊，大西洋東岸南來北往的船隻，也要在這里調整航向，戰略地位十分重要，歷來為兵家爭奪之處。
