根據巴赫金（Bakhtin）的觀點，文類起源於特定情境中的言語表達（如問候、告別、回應），這些言語表達隨著時間變得規則化，最終發展成為書寫的修辭結構。書寫是一種模仿。從最簡單的視覺符號來看，書寫模仿聲音、停頓與空間；在更複雜的語法層次上，它則固定語言並發展出各種文類，而這些文類最初確立自身為話語（discourse）的文類。然而，喚起並不是透過不斷重複語言行動來實現書寫的形式。沒有任何文類能夠準確地對應或涵蓋它。
