家明·具爭議性的地標

前個星期六，擅長講故事的木森和國樑把我們的母親河新加坡河的各個景點連接成線，把線組成圖，再按圖索驥，為我們講了一段駁船碼頭近200年的滄桑史。從河邊如何從貨艙林立以及經營出入口貿易的“九八行”一條街，“淪落”為今天的“酒吧行”，當然也提到了埃爾金（Elgin）橋。無巧不成書，該橋就在隔天出現在《早報》《學人視角》符詩專寫的《150年後》一文裏。

先來說一說這道橋，它可算是新加坡開埠至今，重建了最多的一道橋了。根據吳彥鴻的《新加坡風土志》，早在新加坡開埠前在那兒就該有一道大木橋，因為萊佛士在1819年6月26日曾下令要華人“從大橋的一端移居到河口”去。木橋在1823年重建為一座可以被拉起或放下的活動橋，當時也俗稱為“猴橋”（Monkey Bridge）。過後再經兩次修建，在1863年從印度運來了一座鐵橋，架在河上，命名為“埃爾金橋”。在之後的百多年，…
