情節的敘述，隱蔽地補償受挫的欲望，這種觀點涉及敘事學與精神分析學——也只有這二者，所謂的社會歷史並未介入。一些理論家的確認為，只有“敘事的真相”而不存在“歷史的真相”。
“不可能講清楚一個敘事作品，是不是比另一個更真實，只能弄清是不是比另一個更好，也就是說，更加有效。”

然而，作為著名的西方馬克思主義批評家，伊格爾頓不可能如此簡單。作家與讀者均置身於某種社會歷史，他們的敘事與閱讀必定與周邊的文化環境息息相關。這時，敘事與欲望始終相互調整，二者共同期待贏得社會歷史的認可。伊格爾頓找到的一個簡明例子是《簡-愛》。維多利亞時代的社會歷史設置的問題是，“允許簡實現自我，但必須限制在社會傳統規定的安全範圍內”。…
