楊照·工匠手藝與藝術追求－－「2012聯合文學小說新人獎」評審意見|
短篇小說要有亮點，中篇小說要有能夠說服人的結構，當然在此之前，小說不管多長多短，先要有相應於其內容所需的敘事口氣與節奏。這是我在今年聯合文學小說新人獎評審中，最強烈的意見。
容我大略的（因而也必然是粗糙的）分別：寫小說有一部分是工匠手藝，另一部分則是藝術追求。篇幅愈長，手藝部分占的比例就愈高。
長久以來，聽了許多人云亦云的批評，說當代小說之病，病在沒有故事，所以不好看。這是一種誤解小說，將小說與故事混淆了的里巷之言，根本錯失了小說真正的價值。小說不是故事，小說是找到一種特殊的、獨特的、對的方式來將故事說出來。…

楊照·語言紀律的崩壞
一八三０年代，托克維爾在『民主在美國』書中分析英國英語和美國英語，發現英語到了美國之後，增加了很多變化，而且其中很多是「非功能性」的變化．也就是說，並不是因為到了新環境，為了描述新現象、討論新事物，所以在語言中增添新的部分．「非功能性」的變化，是為變化而變化的．也就是不改變也不會怎樣，但在美國那樣的社會中，卻就改變了．
英國人到美國聽美國人說話，常常覺得莫名其妙．一句話明明在英式英語裡有現成的、好好的說法，美國人偏不用，要改成自己的說法．而且這裡的人這樣說，那裡的人也不願意用同樣方法說，要有自己不同的改法．改過的美式英語實在找不出什麼比原本英式英語好的地方啊！…
