Editorial: Rooted in Culture, Elevated as National Heritage — Welcoming Tadau Kaamatan’s Historic Milestone

By the Editorial Board, Iconada.tv (愛墾網)

Since its founding in July 2009, Iconada.tv (愛墾網) has stood by a simple yet enduring conviction: 文化有根,創意是伴 — Rooted in Culture, Companion to Creativity. Creativity does not emerge from a vacuum; it draws its deepest vitality from the soil of lived memory, ancestral wisdom, and local narratives.

Today, we warmly welcome a landmark moment for Malaysia’s cultural landscape: the official declaration of Sabah’s Tadau Kaamatan as a National Heritage during the 6th National Heritage Declaration 2026 ceremony in Putrajaya.

From Village Harvest to National Treasure

For centuries, the annual harvest festival celebrated by the Kadazan, Dusun, Murut, and Rungus communities has been far more than a seasonal gathering. Anchored in the sacred myth of Huminodun and gratitude to Kinoingan, Kaamatan embodies a profound ecological philosophy—one that honors the land, respects community solidarity, and celebrates life through the rhythmic pulse of the Sumazau, the soulful melodies of the sompoton, the oral poetry of the bobohizan, and the enduring grace of Unduk Ngadau.

Gazetting Tadau Kaamatan under the National Heritage Act 2005 elevates these living traditions from regional custom to a shared national treasure. It affirms that the indigenous voices of Borneo are foundational pillars of Malaysia’s cultural identity.

Empowering Rural Classrooms and Cultural Keepers

At Iconada.tv, our community of writers, filmmakers, photographers, and researchers has long championed 在地敘事 (local narratives) and 地方創生 (regional revitalization)—from documenting Sabah’s cultural landscapes to exploring rural educational resilience.

The true promise of this National Heritage status lies in what it unlocks for rural Sabahans:

Validating Indigenous Knowledge: Rural elders, artisans, and ritual specialists are formally recognized not merely as keepers of the past, but as vital educators of the future.

Bridging Heritage and Education: Statutory recognition creates new pathways for mother-tongue preservation, curriculum integration, and dedicated funding for rural schools and community cultural centers.

Fueling Cultural Creativity: When young Sabahans see their ancestral heritage honored at the highest national level, it inspires a new generation of storytellers, designers, and filmmakers to reinterpret tradition for the contemporary world.

A Call to Creators and Storytellers

Recognition is not a museum glass case; it is a living torch. As Tadau Kaamatan enters this historic new chapter, Iconada.tv invites cultural practitioners, educators, visual artists, and youth across Sabah and beyond to continue documenting, interpreting, and celebrating the stories of the harvest.
When culture is firmly rooted, creativity becomes its finest companion. Congratulations to the people of Sabah and all Malaysians on this proud milestone.
