[ICONADA Research Team] Centering the Margins: Cheyenne Tan and the Reconfiguration of Contemporary Documentary Storytelling
In today’s highly institutionalized documentary industry, the question of who has the authority to tell history has become as important as history itself. The rise of Malaysian documentary producer Cheyenne Tan, a Chinese Malaysian from Kuching, Sarawak, reflects this shift in narrative power.
Rather than entering the American film industry through a traditional Hollywood pathway, Tan has built her career from a position shaped by transnational mobility and an outsider’s perspective. Occupying a space between the cultural center and the margins, she has developed a distinctive way of seeing and interpreting stories.
A key aspect of her work is the use of archival research, cross-cultural storytelling, and non-fiction narrative design. In the Oscar-nominated documentary St. Louis Superman, which examines race, gun violence, and community activism in Missouri, Tan helped transform a local political figure’s personal experiences into a broader public narrative. Her role was not simply to tell stories, but to help determine which histories become visible.
As her career progressed, Tan became an active contributor to major American documentaries addressing social justice, homelessness, the criminal justice system, and capital punishment. Projects such as Through Our Eyes: Shelter and I Am Ready, Warden focus on individual experiences while revealing larger institutional structures. In these works, her responsibilities extended beyond production management to include crucial ethical decisions: whose voices are preserved, how sensitive subjects are represented, and how personal stories enter public debate.
Her work on Turning Point: The Vietnam War marked a further expansion into large-scale historical reconstruction. The series revisits the Vietnam War within the broader context of Cold War geopolitics, requiring the reorganization of archival footage, oral histories, and political records into a coherent contemporary narrative. Here, Tan’s role resembles that of a historian as much as a filmmaker, helping audiences reinterpret the meaning of history in the present.
More recently, Tan has begun shifting from producer to director. Her upcoming short documentary, Becoming My Mother, represents a significant turn toward personal storytelling. While her earlier projects focused on the histories of others, this work draws from her own experience, challenging a long-standing industry dynamic in which marginalized creators are often encouraged to observe others rather than tell their own stories.
Tan’s career embodies a form of “marginal centrality”: culturally, she remains an observer from the margins; professionally, she participates in the core mechanisms of American documentary production. Her trajectory highlights a broader transformation in documentary practice—where marginality is no longer merely an identity or location, but a method. Through outsider perspectives, archival reconstruction, and cross-cultural storytelling, she exemplifies a new documentary ethic in which history is continually rewritten across multiple boundaries rather than narrated from a single center.
